Heading over to Paris at the moment may not be as cheap as it was six months ago, but there's still plenty of cheap, fun things to do in and around Paris in January:

The Sales

This year's winter sales will begin on 7 January and run until 10 February. Bizarrely, Sales are tightly restricted in France, and all shops wishing to have sales must abide by the dates agreed by government.

Les Halles and Chatelet

Chatelet is pretty much the geographic centre of Paris, and is also the commercial centre, housing the Les Halles, largest shopping mall in the city, a pretty unattractive builing built in the mid 80’s as part of President Mitterand's “Grands Projets”.

Hotels are easy to find in the area, and transport to other areas is probably better than anywhere else as Chatelet is one of the biggest interchanges on the subway system. It’s just a couple of stops from Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon, so is an easy place to stay for anyone arriving by Eurostar or Roissy Charles de Gaulle, and it’s also on the RER line which links up to Paris’s other main airport, Orly.

Le Marais

The Marais, literally translated as the marshes, is situated between Bastille and The Louvre.  Famous for being the gay area of Paris, the Marais has a lot to offer visitors of all persuasions.  The many narrow streets and olde-worlde shops are a welcome change from the Haussmannien sandstone buildings that dominate the main boulevards of Paris and, being relatively traffic-free, offer a calmer route between Bastille and the Louvre than the Rue de Rivoli.

The Marais is a lively place at any time of day or night, with a host of small designer shops, jewellers, and trendy second hand shops, wedged in amongst the equally numerous cafés and bars. See the Bars and Restaurants section for some tips on which bars to visit in the Marais.
